Internet Addiction Especially For Young People Media Essay Today, surfing the web has become a hobby such like going to bars, shopping the malls or watching movies. As the internet has become a major part of mainstream of life, some of the mental health professionals have marked that there is a percentage of people using the internet in a compulsive and out-of-control behavior. In Japan (April 2010), a 30-year-old man who is addicted to internet killed his father and his 1 year-old niece because his father terminated the contract of internet broadband. He then set up a fire and burnt his house. In this case, 2 people died and 3 people injured. This phenomenon of obsessive of internet usage has been termed Internet Addiction based on its resemblance to common addictions such as drinking, smoking, and gambling. Internet Addiction has even been the best as a concrete disorder, notably by some psychologists. Since the internet is used by all of us as a regular part of their job or education, it is difficult to separate those excessive from norma l use and which cannot use simple measures. Most fundamental in distinguishing normal from problem internet user is the occurrence of compulsion to use the internet. For normal users, even how heavy is their usage of the internet, they would not neglect their occupation and their relationships with their family and friends to get online. Mental health professionals are break as to whether Internet addiction is true existing or not. No one argues that some people use the internet in an obsessive behavior even to a point where it interferes their working performance and social relationships. What doubtful is whether people becomes addicted to the internet itself, or the inspiration and information that the website provides. The argument circumfluence the Internet Addiction is accurately whether people addicted to the internet itself, or to the inspiration via the net, such as online gambling, sex sites or even communication with friends via chat and blogs. Some psychologists do not regard in addiction to the internet itself, but rather in addiction to inspiration that the internet provides. They propose that new internet users often show an initial fascination with the innovation of the web, but eventually lose interest and reduce their time spent online back to a normal, healthy amount. Those abuser who do go on to sh ow obsessive internet utilization, for the most parts become compulsive only with considering to particular types of information got online, such as online gambling, facebook-ing, writing blogs, chat room or shopping sites. This is not an addiction to the internet itself, but rather risk-taking, sex, socializing or shopping. In real meaning, the main addictive characteristic of the internet is its capability to enable instant and relatively social stimulation. It is true that the internet has made it easier and more convenient for someone to develop such a compulsion. However Addicted Internet users are addicted to a preferred kind of social inspiration and not to the internet itself. The youngster nowadays can easily become addicted to the internet, they are often compelled to face their poor background growth; dysfunctional caring and lack of positive parenting skills. Its effects can easily be seen to those youngsters who are suffering from the above. Internet addicts can hardly lead to a normal life. In recent years, an increasing number of internet addicts are opened to voluntary treatment. Yet, many others are less able to resist temptation. Internet addicts are deprived of a happy life, some youth who grow up in poor family and lack of caring will seek for alternative to fulfill their psychological needs and desires; it is kind of a compensation or a replacement to them. The level of compensation depends on the individual factors, such as their ability of self control, as well as their capability of problem solving and anxiety management. Eventually such a harsh life often results in stress and strains. Some young people use internet for fun, while others t ake it in order to escape from the reality which cause them easily indulge with the internet. Internet addicts usually have no self-confidence and self-respect, as their personal identity; autonomy; and relationships with peers may not be satisfied through interactive activities, they may then try to shed social inhibitions, which leads to one of the indulgence, Internet addiction. If they are not pleasure with their free time, they may tend to seek for excitement from cyberspace and therefore, their addiction is undoubtfully increased. We can not deny that the encouragement of society and the common use of Internet activities (e.g. school education) have raised the level of Internet addiction not only in Hong Kong but all over the world. The Government; teachers and parents should do their best to uproot the vice of internet addiction; to educate the young people to avoid insidious attraction which will soon become physically and psychologically dependent on the computer and internet services. The government may provide more education and recreation centres; promote more a p roper use of internet publicity campaigns for the young people to develop a healthier lifestyle. Teachers should educate their students by implying positive attitudes towards their indulgence of internet. Internet addiction can brings immeasurable harm to youngsters and the consequences are far-reaching, once addicted, they will find it very difficult to abstain from using the internet even though they know they may have a lot of necessary tasks to complete in their lives. This may result another problem, their outbreaks of tempers are very common among internet addicts, this causes a break down in their family relationships, and therefore, parents should pay more attention to their children in order to know their needs and discomfort in daily life. Internet addiction is not classified as a formal mental health disorder. However, mental health professionals who have written about the subject note symptoms or behaviors that, if sufficient numbers has shown, it may indicate problematic use of internet. These include: Obsession with the Internet which user often thinks about the Internet while they are not on the line. Loss of control; addicted users feel unable or unwilling to stay away from the computer. They can be just sitting down to check e-mails or look for certain information, which can be finished in an hour, however, they can end up staying online for hours. They lose the ability to resist temptation. Inexplicable sadness or moodiness when not online; Dependence on any stuff often causes mood-changing side effects when the addicts is separated from the stuff on which he or she depends on. Distraction is one common symptom of many Internet addicts which it is the compulsion to cheer ones self up by associating themselves o n the Web. Besides, addicts may end up lying to family members about how long they spend online, or find other ways not to disclose the depth of their involvement with the Internet. Furthermore, it will lead to a loss of a treasurable relationship due to internet use that when users over spend time on the internet, as they often ignore their personal relationships. Time over time, those relationships may fail as friends and family members refuse to be treated badly and tend to wanting to break off the relations with the addicted individuals. Compulsive Internet use is a serious problem for certain people, and there are some methods that can be helpful in easing the problem. Internet addiction is a problem of compulsive inspiration, much like drug addiction. Because of this resemblance, compulsory treatment and rehabilitation programmes known to be useful to help drug addicts on recovery are suitable to use on Internet addicts when the need wakes. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a well known technique which is drawn from a popular school of therapy. These forms of therapy are well studied and very helpful when applied to different behavioral and mental difficulties. They are functional and concentrate on decreasing out of control addict behaviors, and preventing slip back. In curing drug addiction, usually the goal of therapy is abstinence but it doesnt really make sense for Internet addition. The Internet has become a basic part of modern business. It could become a serious burden if we ask people not to use the internet. In place of abstinence, a better aim for Internet addiction therapy is reduce the total amount of time of using the internet. Since Internet addicts literally will have difficulty in controlling themselves from the Internet, therapy techniques can be more motivated to reduce the temptation, and becoming more conscious of the possible grim drawbacks of over-using the Internet. Therapists will also gradually help the addicts to recognize triggers that lead to over-used of the Internet. Some ignorant addicts simply believe that their indulgence is kind of just happen and that they have no responsibilities or no role on the matter. Therapists will often discuss in details on the indulgence with addicts so that they have the consciousness of their triggers and can choose to act in a substitute way when they next become defenseless. To divide identifying triggers, is to help addicts not to over-hooked up to the internet. At times, internet is necessary to in line with the educational purpose, but restriction is vital at home, some sensitive disseminate information should be blocked by the parents. Therapists set realistic and measurable goals for their internet usage with their parents. Patients are asked to count their total time of using the Internet in a log which is for the therapy to use on the track progress. To ensure this goal is achieved, users can count on timers or alarms, so as to count how long did they spent online. We all understand it is never easy to achieving our goals and self-discipline ourselves. Therapists help addicts to keep up this disciplined work by giving weekly progress reports and set up rewards for them when goals have been met. Sharing with a therapist, or with a family member in the programme can help motivation to decrease the Internet surfing time. Scientific invention has caused a great change in the mode of life of most people in the world, peoples lifestyle have greatly improved, and influences our daily life in many ways and has far-reaching consequences in all walks of life. It cannot be denied that technological advance has brought us a much better and easier life than we had ever dreamt of, and greatly raise our standard of living and bring us material enjoyment. Internet saves us a lot of trouble and time; it also provides different kinds of amusement, enjoyment and luxury. The increasing use of computers and the constantly improved electronic data processing techniques have brought revolutionary changes to our daily life. At the same time, it can also destroy our lives without our consciousness; we may find ourselves in a state of constant oppression both in mind and body. In fact, living in an era of science, we are far from a natural placid life. As a result, some people may suffer from mental illness or a nervous br eakdown; interpersonal relationships have not been given the attention they deserve. When we weight up the situation, however, we find that science technologies has more advantages than disadvantages. If progress in science is being used to serve good purposes, it can indeed be a great blessing to human kind.

Teaching Assistant Essay

Question 1 Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments. First I would speak to the class teacher I was working with and find out the following points. 1. Which percussion instruments will be needed? 2. How many students will be in the group? 3. Where will we be practising with the instruments? 4, When will the instruments be required? 5. Where the instruments are kept? 6. What is required of me during the lesson (help students? Take photographs or other tasks needing completing) 7. If the member of staff requires me to research some fun activities that can be done to build up the children’s confidence in using the instruments. Firstly I would research the fun confidence building activities if it was required by talking to a musically inclined member of staff or search the internet for age appropriate tasks that lend to the varying skills of the students. After the directions were discussed I would make the space suitable for the lesson, taking into consideration adequate space for the group of students to work comfortably with the instruments with out fear of hitting one another, I would also check the surrounding area for any other dangers present. Next I would gather the necessary equipment making sure to check that it was in working order and safe to be used by the students noting any damaged equipment that I found needing repair or replacing to inform the class teacher, also recording what equipment I have borrowed and when so that others going for the same equipment knew where it was. Then I would set out the instruments in the space the students will be using for this lesson before the teacher is ready to bring the students in so that the lesson could commence with out disturbing the students by making them have to wait for equipment to be set up. During the lesson I would do the tasks discussed with member of staff before the lesson so that they could concentrate on the lesson at hand. Finally after the lesson has finished I would gather up the equipment I had borrowed and check it again to make sure no damage had occurred and it was still in safe working order, return the items and store them safely in there correct storage space noting that the equipment had been returned. Question 2 What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson? My role organising would be determined in the discussion I would have prior to the lesson with the member of staff which might be to check the amount of working instruments we have available in school and if they are available for the time we require them. I might have to record the lessons for use on a DVD or school website if parental consent has been given, meaning I would need to acquire and be proficient in the use of a digital camera or camcorder. If a CD containing music is to be used I would need to set up a CD player. Any electrical equipment needed I would check to make sure they have been tested recently by a qualified electrician. If a music CD is required to help give the students an idea of keeping timing with a rhythm or beat so this would need to be sourced and checked for scratches, making sure we have the relevant rights to use the material on the CD. In respect of using and maintaining the equipment would check all the available equipment needed for the lesson as much in advance as I could so that I would be able to inform the member of staff of damaged or broken equipment that needs repaired or replaced. Doing so in advance would be of great benefit to the teacher, as then depending on how many instruments we have in safe working order a decision could be made to either source more or maybe get the students to share. After the lesson I would gather the items we used and check them once more before I put them back into storage and inform the teacher of any change in the condition of them. Question 3 Describe how you act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils? In class and also anywhere around school premises I would act in a respectful manner towards all people staff, parent or student meaning I would talk to them politely and listen carefully to what they had to say. Respect also comes in the way to approach a student I would walk over ready to help however possible instead of race over in a hurry to get a job done. I would conduct myself in a calm and collected manner where my voice would sound friendly and my body language would be welcoming so that students could feel relaxed and safe helping them to work well with myself and build a rapport. When working with students who have good standards of behaviour they would be praised verbally in front of there peers with an added bonus of maybe a sticker for a full lesson or full day of good behaviour and contribution in class giving that student a sense of accomplishment. Where as a student who does not practice good standards of behaviour would be asked in front of the other students on the table to think how that action was not appropriate and told it will not be accepted again. I would always talk to the student misbehaving with a sterner voice but never yell or shout as it would be counter productive and a form of bullying in itself, if the behaviour remained unacceptable I would refer them to the class teacher. At anytime with a student or group of students and I had to correct them for example a misspelled or incorrect pronunciation of a word, I would correct them in a way that did not make them feel unimportant or belittled because they got something wrong as it is always better to try and fail than never try at all. I would then make more of an effort to find something that the student does well and give praise for there contribution to the task at hand as well as for trying there best with the thing they got incorrect. My behaviour and approach in class and outside of class towards the people I would come into contact with would always be consistent so that the students would know what I accept in regards to standards of behaviour. Which would also help students think that I would be approachable and not over react or dismiss a problem they may have with there work or in there life. Question 4 What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately? Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence. I would first off read the schools behaviour policy to get an outline of what is expected from the students along with any notes on consequences and rewards for any actions, also use common knowledge of acceptable behaviour. Consistency in my standards of behaviour would be foremost in a practical example to the students of what behaviour is acceptable; giving them a model they can see to work towards in respect to how they want to act. My consistency would also breed predictability for example when I first see the students in the morning they would be greeted warmly and asked how they were feeling today, nurturing there social and empathetic development while they express there feeling. Respect will be shown at all times to who ever I interact with making it easier for students to show respect towards myself and in turn their peers. I think the student would better understand and be more likely if as a school or a class to make it more personal made a poster of what they consider good and unacceptable behaviour. This way they have contributed and feel the rules are fair as they made them not just told this is what you have to do. Confrontation should always be respectful meaning do not just start shouting at a student for there inappropriate behaviour but develop numerous ways to confront a student by discussing with staff to see which forms they believe work well. In promoting good behaviour I would reward with praise as my main reward and if I believe a student does something extra to what is normal, say opening a day to a member of staff or helping someone in their group comprehend the task they are having difficulty with I would reward them with a sticker which would serve as a visible sign of recognition to a good deed and encourage other children to do the same. The sticker would also make the student who received it feel important and appreciated for their effort, especially knowing that rewards are not given out at random but for consistent good work or behaviour, not forgetting to reward students who are trying but are not as good as others in certain areas to give a confidence boost. If I witnessed or an incident of bullying was brought to my attention I would firstly ensure I was calm and consistent to what my interaction with a student in an everyday matter would be so not to make anyone feel uncomfortable whether it be a child informing, bullying or being bullied. Then I would start a record in a note book at first of people involved and what it was about. The incident would be isolated from the other students so that no one else was involved giving a calmer atmosphere to ascertain what is happening by talking calmly to the students as always practiced in school. Once the situation has calmed down I would inform the class teacher as to what happened giving any notes taken so they could read the account. I would then be inclined to do an assembly on bullying and why it is not accepted in our school so that the messages went out to all the students and did not target any one person. This would be better learned if I got students involved in maybe suggesting how to deal with a situation before it escalates to bullying or if an incident of bullying is observed, making anti bullying posters would be a good task to perform to raise awareness. Question 5 Describe how you might appropriately observe the physical abilities and skills of a nine year old boy. I would discuss with the teacher as to what kind of observation they required as they may want a observation of where the child’s abilities are at the moment or how they develop over a set period of time. Then understanding exactly what is required from the observation and the protocols set out within the school for observing students I would plan the observation. Firstly I would plan to do it either at an active play time or when the students are all doing P.E. so that I can observe the student with out them realising it giving a more accurate account. I would make a sheet for the observation stating date, time started, time finished, student and reason for observation and have boxes for small notes regarding different aspects of physical abilities and skills such as; 1. Confidence setting up a sports game to be played.  2. Hand-eye co-ordination. 3. How they completed the task asked of them 4. Did they require any assistance during the task? 5. The way they interact with others during tasks. 6. Is the child challenged by the tasks or did they find them easy. 7. Concentration of student during task. And a conclusion along with any other points discussed with the teacher before hand. Once the observation had finished I would then make a neater copy of the notes making sure everything recorded is fact and not my interpretation of events. I would keep a blank copy of the sheet used so that I could observe the same aspects each time. At a pre arranged time I would give feedback to the member of staff in which ever way they requested be it written or talked about with or with out the student present. If the student is present I would praise there accomplishments and constructively subject areas that could be improved. The notes taken during the observation would be kept in a safe place for five years designated by the member of staff and would not be open for discussion to anyone respecting the student’s confidentiality.

Consider the writers’ intentions in writing their Gothic stories

What is horror? Horror is a way of coming to terms with anxieties in each person and in a society as a whole. But horror also plays a role of intensifying the imagination and gives people the adrenaline rush that comes, with being scared. Several factors contribute to the creation of different emotions and feelings. Stevenson uses a multitude of ways to give the overall effect of mystery and horror rather than a sudden, obvious indication. This reveals how Stevenson differs from previous gothic writers. Although Stevenson may have differed from previous gothic writers he still managed to include both traditional and more modern gothic conventions. By including full moons and by exploiting the excessiveness of science Stevenson maintains the more traditional and stereotypical gothic conventions. But by conveying two different characters that are the same Stevenson is including more modern conventions by revealing that terror was created by humans and can only be ended by humans. By using both traditional and modern conventions Stevenson is able to break boundaries by drawing on science rather than superstition but also by emphasizing that the horror experienced is in us, now. This is one of the things that need to be observed when concluding the effectiveness. Another thing to observe is when the novel was written. This greatly influences the way the novel has been written and the impact that it made on people of that time. Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde novel may not seem too terrifying now with films such as the Exorcist coming out. The Exorcist was both original and modern in terms of convention. The Exorcist built on an idea that demons could possess individuals just like in Jekyll and Hyde where in the end Hyde possesses Jekyll permanently. This illustrates how even the most modern films copy certain aspects of Stevenson's gothic novels to emphasize the fear being experienced. But for the people and era of that time Jekyll and Hyde was a novel to be reckoned with and was definitely a bookmark to how gothic stories should be written. The way in which it revolutionized the way that gothic novels are, in that the setting and atmosphere were different then previous gothic novels â€Å"deadly smell†. With previous novels the only thing they needed to include was that it was dark, foggy, gloomy, isolated area that most likely contained a castle and was set in some unfamiliar part of the world like Transylvania. Jekyll and Hyde being a gothic novel included some of these but also managed to be effective in different areas. Jekyll and Hyde set their scene in a very familiar place (London), with the idea to emphasize the fear that the audience felt when reading about this tale, the way in which this was accomplished was by drawing on the frighteningly familiar rather than the absurd.. This was just one of the ways that Stevenson changed gothic books and made them into effective horror stories. However this was not the only thing which made Jekyll and Hyde an effective and daring gothic book. The anxieties that it dealt with showed people that either they were justified to feel this way or that things such as homosexuality are nothing to be feared of. The anxieties that it mentions are to do with science going too far, atheism growing and homosexuality. These all contribute to the effect of a horror novel. As Stevenson is trying to explore new ground with Jekyll and Hyde. The first thing to notice is that the characters are described completely different from each other, as one is a Doctor in a very high place where as Hyde can be described as having â€Å"ape like fury†. By showing the immediate contrast of the two characters Stevenson creates a sense of mystery which all gothic books should have. By creating ambiguity he is trying to lead the audience of that time to the wrong conclusion so as to make sure that the his book is shocking and intelligent. These qualities both contribute to the effectiveness of horror. However for that time the novel was nothing but a groundbreaking barrier-smashing novel at that time. Compared to some of the previous gothic novels you can tell how the genre of gothic has evolved from previous books which give everything away too easily and involve the most obvious give away (such as castles). Although this may be true for the late 1800's the same can not be said about today. With the fame that comes along with Jekyll and Hyde the majority of people already know the story, meaning that when they read the actual novel they could be disappointed by it, due to the fact that it's that old. Not only this but the number of films which take the story on usually let it down meaning that the audience does not have the same respect for the novel as the people of 120 years ago did. But whether or not people respect is not the case but whether they appreciate it is. One aspect that they could have appreciated from all the gothic writers was that they all identified themselves philosophically as romantics. Stevenson among others all had interests in the wild and untamed aspects of nature and they all believed in the power of human imagination. These thoughts lead to them becoming outsiders. These outsiders would have been appreciated because of their views were not expressed by the wider society. These views consequently were revealed in their novels. Just like another writer of the time Stroker (Dracula), they tried to perceive the main character as having an addiction to a certain drug. Whether it is blood or a concoction. Both writers attempted to give the reader a certain side of a character that had previously never been seen by audiences of the 1880's. Where as Stroker pointed out quite clearly who the evil demon was, Stevenson had a more suspenseful and unique style of only giving away the odd small ounce of information. I think that for his time Stevenson was quite ahead of the game with his piece Jekyll and Hyde. His attention to detail, whether it being about the atmosphere or how a man died was very unique for that time causing him to be famous for writing a novel like Jekyll and Hyde. Both the stories of Jekyll and Hyde and Dracula have certain similarities between them. Both writers pioneered in bending and breaking the rules of classic gothic horror stories. The more traditional of these two stories is Stoker's Dracula. Set in a dark unfamiliar setting of Transylvania, where like most gothic stories there happens to be darkness, fog, isolation and the super natural. Although both are very famous stories they differ in many ways. The story of Jekyll and Hyde is more to do with expressing different ways of really intensifying the readers, or viewers' imagination. Where as Dracula is more to do with the traditional way of scaring people through super natural occurrences that happens in the story, but unlike Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula brings in more emotions. These emotions of lust and love are not present in Jekyll and Hyde, where as they are a key aspect in Dracula. Another key difference that appeared in Dracula was a motive. The motive of falling in love made this man wild and crazy. Where as it can be argued that Jekyll's motive is more to do with scientific experiments rather then emotion. But others can say that Jekyll and Hyde really has no motive to cause all of this death and suffering in the world, except for the fact that being in a high position could mean that you are suppressing your anger. This suppression is due to the fact that Jekyll's reputation as a doctor depends vastly on the actions that he has committed. So when his suppressed anger is let out it takes the form of Hyde. Although count Dracula is also in the same high position, his anger is not suppressed meaning that his anger is let out in arguably healthy ways. This reveals that there must be some kind of compromise between Jekyll's lack of anger and Dracula's excess of anger. Although in this case the writers seem to have different opinions on how to make the audience perceive their monsters, they both tried to deal with the same issues. The main similarity between Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde is that they try and reveal the anxieties of society at that time. They both tried to illustrate science going to far, in both of their novels. The ways in which both writers accomplish this are different but effective. The reasons for revealing anxieties, was not only to make the audience feel adrenaline but also to show them that such things were ridiculous to be afraid of. These two writers were not the only ones that tried to both revolutionize and be effective. As the signalmen was wrote. In the novel the Signalman Dickens describes the environment as having an â€Å"earthy, deadly smell†. This reveals us how like Stevenson's book that there is a super natural aspect to the plot of the story and that this brings in a mysterious presence into the story. Which leads the audience to ask what the super natural thing is. The product of this super naturalism is ambiguity. The effectiveness of ambiguity can be seen with in all three novels, as ambiguity is made to make the reader think and try to some sort of conclusion before the plot is revealed and all is clear. Another similarity between the characters in the play is that they are both conceived as short and hairy. This is to get the audience to imagine them having similarities to certain animals â€Å"ape like fury†. This may also illustrate another anxiety felt by society regarding people that were short, abnormal or hairy. Again this adds to the effectiveness and impact of each of the novels. Showing us how a combination of characters, plot, ambiguity and anxiety leads to the effectiveness and appeal to the audience of that era and era's to come. Although anxiety's and ambiguity maybe one of the many techniques for effect. The one, which is predominant, is tension. The writers' intentions are to use many different aspects of gothicness and expand on them, this is done so as to make audiences more vulnerable to the things around them† it was as if one had left the natural world†. All horror stories include tension so as to be affirmative that they can terrify and astound the audience in different and more realistic ways. All three novels have an essence of tension in them or else audiences may not of found them entertaining. The writers' all include a sense of ambiguity, so to create the tension as much as possible. On top of this they all present characters, unlike any other previously experienced, all of which have mysteriousness about them. An example of this is the Signalman. Within the Signalman the main character behaves in many paranormal ways. This suggests to the audience that he maybe suffering from either a problem regarding his eye or a problem that causes him to hallucinate the appearance of specters. Also the characteristics that I character holds also adds to both the originality and effectiveness of that character in the novels. In the Signalman the main character is portrayed as a wasted youth, student of natural philosophy . The effect of bringing new and previously unheard of characters, both astonishes the audience as well as adds to the originality of the horror story on the whole. A crucial aspect of every gothic novel is the questions left at the end. In the case of the Signalman a quote from Colridge revealed that it was â€Å"unclear what to conclude†. I think that the unanswered questions add to the thought process that the audience must go through. This reveals how having unclear endings leads to the audience being more assertive in what to rule out and what not to. Overall the fact that the audience has to actively think adds to the creation of tension through ambiguity. To conclude I think that the writers were all trying to adjust people's perception of what is scary and what is not. By making the plot and features of the novels vary they have accomplished in changing people's views and expectation, both in society and from gothic novels. Not only managing this they have also managed to ensure that a combination of features present in novels can lead to a book becoming effective. Whether from the characters or from the tension being built up via ambiguity and other devices used to build up tension. The effect of all of these is that it takes people to a place, which they rarely visit, that place being their fears. The purpose of such novels is to make people face up to their fears, which they previously haven't experienced or haven't encountered. This reveals what the writers intention were to take people out of their mundane lives and surprise and shock them with their horror novels.

Summary of Major Ideas In â€Å"Michael,† William Wordsworth attempts to demonstrate the reader about good life lessons throughout the poem. He states that â€Å"Michael† implements Romanticism literary philosophies and characteristics. He supports this claim by showing literary devices throughout the poem. He describes the main point of the story by presenting about Michael, an old shepherd who sacrifices Luke, his only child to the city for seeking to keep a family’s land. Critical Evaluation of Work Wordsworth accurately proves â€Å"Michael† as a pastoral poem when he describes Michael, who has worked as a shepherd in his life. The pastoral poem is defined as a poem that demonstrates an idealistic value and set in the rural environment.
